3 billion conversations in, Erica is still just a virtual assistant — and that's the point

Bank of America · 2018–ongoing

What they did

Bank of America's Erica handles everyday banking questions and proactive nudges (unusual charges, upcoming bills, subscription creep) inside the bank's app, scoped deliberately to informational and low-risk transactional tasks rather than autonomous account actions.

What happened

Bank of America reports Erica passed 3 billion client interactions by mid-2025, averaging 58 million a month across roughly 50 million users, with 98% of clients finding what they need and an average interaction lasting 48 seconds. Roughly half of interactions are proactive — Erica surfacing something before the client asks. An internal version for employees is used by over 90% of BofA staff and has cut IT help-desk calls by half.

The so-what

The banking-AI deployment with the longest track record and the least controversy is also the least ambitious one on paper: no autonomous transfers, no agentic decision-making, just fast, well-scoped answers — a reminder that durability and audacity aren't the same axis.
