"The world's first Watson-enabled hotel concierge" — a single lobby robot that quietly vanished

Hilton × IBM Watson · 2016–2018

What they did

In March 2016, Hilton and IBM launched Connie, a Watson-powered robot concierge piloted at exactly one property — the Hilton McLean in Virginia — positioned in the press as a glimpse of AI-run hospitality, answering guest questions about local attractions, dining, and hotel amenities.

What happened

The launch generated a large wave of press coverage (IBM, Hilton, Fox News, InformationWeek all covered the debut). Coverage of any expansion beyond the single pilot site never materialized, and Connie was later quietly replaced at that same hotel by Ava, a mobile telepresence unit — with no follow-up case study, rollout announcement, or stated results ever published by either company.

The so-what

Watch for the shape of this pattern, not just this example: a splashy single-location pilot generates a launch-day press cycle, then the story simply stops, with no "here's what we learned" or "here's where it is now." Silence after a launch is itself a data point — it usually means the pilot didn't clear whatever bar would have made expanding it worth announcing.
